On January 1st 2012 PokerStars changed the way they award VIP Player Points (VPPs), switching from what is known as the "dealt" method to "weighted contributed". Historically VPPs would be split equally amongst all the players who were dealt into a hand regardless of them contributing to a pot or not. But since the changes VPPs are awarded proportionally based on each player's contribution to the pot.

The examples below show the changes in action:

Five players at a $1/$2 No Limit Hold'em cash game

Pre-flop:

• Player 1 raises to $6
• Player 2 folds
• Player 3 folds
• Player 4 (the $1 small blind) calls
• Player 5 (the $2 big blind) calls

Post-flop:

• Player 4 bets $9
• Player 5 moves all in for $21
• Player 1 folds
• Player 4 calls
• The remaining cards are dealt and the $60 pot is awarded to Player 4.

The total pot is $60 in total so the total rake on this pot is $3, which is worth 16.5VPPs (5.5VPPs per $1). Under the old system each of the five players would have received 16.5/5 = 3.3VPPs each, despite Players 4 & 5 contributing $27 each to the pot, Player 1 $6 and the other two players nothing.

Under the new method the VPPs would be awarded as follows:

• Player 1 contributed $6 (10% of the pot) so receives 1.65 VPPs
• Player 2 contributed $0 (0% of the pot) so receives 0 VPPs
• Player 3 contributed $0 (0% of the pot) so receives 0 VPPs
• Player 4 contributed $27 (45% of the pot) so receives 7.43 VPPs
• Player 5 contributed $27 (45% of the pot) so receives 7.43PPs

Limits and Rake

PokerStars has a large selection of limit levels that are sure to appeal to everyone, from the beginner, to the experienced high stakes player. PokerStars fixed limit Hold'em cash games begin with micro limits of $0.02/$0.04 up to $1000/$2000. No Limit Texas Holdem limits begin at just $0.01/$0.02 and increase gradually through to $200/$400 blinds.

The rake system at PokerStars is one of the lowest in the industry with the average taken being 5% of the pot up to a maximum of $3. The maximum rake ever taken from a single pot is $5 but this will only ever happen at high stakes tables with four or more players seated and for most cases the maximum rake, at No Limit Hold'em tables, ranges from $0.50 to just $3.
