Sunny Jung - Action Packed Day
Sunny Jung - Action Packed Day

Sunny Jung ended the day as a narrow chip leader with 1,810,000 after six hours of frenetic play. Ami Barer, the reigning Aussie Millions Main Event champion, finished second with 1,760,000, and Konstantin Pogodin third on 1,165,000.

The returning field of 24 players was whittled down to final two tables in fast order as short stacks Byron Kaverman (24th), Stephane Blouin (23rd), Team PokerStars Pro Celina Lin (22nd), Jian Zhang (21st), David Douglas (20th), and then Kai Yat Fam (19th) quickly fell in the first level of play to get things down to two tables.

The story of the day was the action provided by Jung, the defending champion of this event. It was a tale of two different tables when the field was reduced to 18, as every time the other table looked over at Jung’s he seemed to have a bet of over 200,000 in front of him to put another opponent to the test. Jung would continually clash with two players — first Meng Dian Peng, and then Konstantin Pogodin — in huge pots that saw him fluctuate up and down. First, he took a big chip lead, then he lost it to Pogodin, and then he took it back when he held the {2-Spades}{2-Hearts} on a board of {9-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} and Pogodin paid off a river bet.

While Jung was contesting huge pots, Sorel Mizzi was eliminated in 18th place for HK$338,000 when he shoved with the {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} over Gabriel Jossec’s open with the {a-Spades}{10-Diamonds}. Mizzi flopped a flush draw, but he couldn’t get there on a final board of {j-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{5-Hearts}.

Michael Tureniec was eliminated by Pogodin in 17th when his three-bet shove with the {k-Spades}{7-Clubs} was called by the {9-Clubs}{9-Spades}. There was a moment when Pogodin thought he had been out-flopped, but his set on the {9-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} board was good.

Jung busted Dimitar Danchev in 16th for HK$338,000 when his {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} beat the {q-Hearts}{q-Spades} of Danchev emphatically on a final run out of {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{6-Spades}{a-Spades}. Also collecting the same amount of prize money were 15th-place finisher Jorn Walthaus and 14th-place finisher Terrence Chan, while Ronald Chun Long Yu made it through to the money jump in 13th, collecting HK$406,000 when his shove with the {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs} lost out to the {a-Spades}{10-Diamonds} of Vladimir Troyanovskiy on a {10-Clubs}{2-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{a-Clubs} board.

It was around this time that Jung hit the 2,000,000 mark when he won another big pot, this time from Barer. The hand failed to go to showdown, as Barer folded to a third barrel from Jung, who kept his play relentless and fearless all day.

It would be a day of frustration and, ultimately, disappointment for start-of-day chip leader Yaxi Zhu. She was eventually eliminated in 12th place for HK$406,000. Aside from one double up, it was a succession of second bests and tight folds for Zhu, who just couldn’t seem to catch a break. Zhu would be eliminated when she check-raised all in on a flop of {2-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{j-Hearts} holding the {k-Spades}{3-Spades}. Barer made the call with the {a-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}. Although the {q-Hearts} on the turn was safe, the {5-Diamonds} provided a cruel way to exit as Barer made his straight.

A four-way flop of {7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{4-Hearts} saw Peng move all in holding the {2-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}, but Jung had him with the {4-Diamonds}{4-Spades} for a flopped full house. The turn {6-Clubs} and river {3-Spades} sent Peng out in 11th with HK$406,000.

The final player to fall before the official table of nine was Bodo Sbrzesny. Jung opened, Barer called, and Sbrzesny shoved with the {a-Diamonds}{q-Spades}. Jung folded, and it took a few minutes before Barer made the call with the {k-Clubs}{q-Hearts}. Sbrzesny couldn’t look and the cards fell {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{3-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}. The river delivered Barer the straight, and Sbrzesny collected HK$540,000 for his 10th-place finish.

Action will resume Saturday at 3 p.m. local time when the surviving nine will play down to a winner. The winner will be crowned the champion and walk away with a massive HK$6,300,000.

Sunny Jung will be looking to make it a historic back-to back win, and all eyes will be on him. Can he do it? If it’s anything like today, it will be a thrill-a-minute ride as he seeks to do it.

Bodo Sbrzesny Eliminated in 10th Place (HK$540,000)

• Level 22: 7,000-14,000, 2,000 ante
Bodo Sbrzesny - 10th Place
Bodo Sbrzesny - 10th Place

Sunny Jung opened with a raise to 30,000 from under the gun. Ami Barer flatted from the next seat over and it folded to Bodo Sbrzesny in the small blind. Sbrzesny three-bet all in for 324,000, allowing action to folded back to Jung. He kicked his cards into the muck and Barer went deep into the tank.

Roughly three minutes passed while Barer pondered his action. As the tension mounted at the table, Barer slid out a stack of chips to signify a call.

Sbrzesny: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}
Barer: {K-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}

Sbrzesny was in a commanding position with his ace-queen and he looked poised to double up heading to the community cards. The flop came down {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{3-Spades}, keeping Sbrzesny in the lead with ace-high. The {10-Diamonds} on the turn drew some murmurs from the crowd surrounding the table as it gave Barer a few more outs to make a straight to the king.

Those murmurs turned to full on gasps as the dealer burned and completed the board with the {J-Diamonds}. Barer made his straight to eliminated Sbrzesny in tenth place for HK$540,000. With this elimination, play has concluded for the day. A full recap, chip counts, and final table seat draw will be made available shortly.

• Level 22: 7,000-14,000, 2,000 ante

Joseph Cheong and Sunny Jung went at it preflop and a five-bet shove from Jung was answered by a call from Cheong.

Cheong showed {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} and was in great shape against the {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts} of Jung.

The final board read {4-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{2-Spades}{4-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} to double up Cheong to over one million chips and put a big dent in Jung’s stack.

Four players including Bodo Sbrzesny, Meng Dian Peng, Sunny Jung, and Ami Barer saw a flop of {7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{4-Hearts} hit the felt in a raised pot. Sbrzesny checked and Peng open-shipped all in for 291,000. Jung flatted the all in, prompting both Barer and Sbrzesny to let go of their hands.

Peng: {2-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}
Jung: {4-Diamonds}{4-Spades}

Jung was in a commanding position with his flopped full house of fours full of sevens. The board completed with the {6-Clubs} and the {3-Spades}, eliminating Wang in 11th place for HK$406,000.

Ami Barer opened with a raise to 28,000 and found calls from Bodo Sbrzesny on the button and Yaxi Zhu in the big blind. Barer called and the hands were tabled.

Barer: {A-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}
Zhu: {K-Spades}{3-Spades}

Zhu was in the lead with her pair of treys and retained that lead after the {Q-Hearts} hit the turn. The river spelled disaster for Zhu, however, as the {5-Diamonds} peeled off to give Barer a wheel. Zhu was eliminated in 12th place and collected HK$406,000 in tournament winnings.

Jung Hits Two Million

• Level 22: 7,000-14,000, 2,000 ante

Meng Dian Peng raised to 30,000 from middle position and found calls from Sunny Jung in the hijack and Ami Barer in the cutoff. The trio took a flop of {8-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{3-Spades} and Peng checked. Jung reached for chips and moved 53,000 into the middle. Barer called, Peng folded, and the {A-Diamonds} hit the felt on the turn.

Jung continued his aggression with a bet of 85,000. Barer called for a second time and the {6-Hearts} finished the board. Using two hands, Jung moved 160,000 into the middle. This bet sent Barer into the tank for right around three minutes. Ultimately, he opted to kick his cards into the muck, allowing Jung to take down the pot and bring his stack to two million.
