Baranov Likes His Albertini Shaken, Not Stirred

With 240,000 in the pot and a board reading {K-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{6-Spades}{A-Hearts}, Sergii Baranov bet 140,000 from the big blind and received a call from Stephane Albertini in the under-the-gun position. The {6-Clubs} river saw Baranov fire again, this time 175,000, and Albertini ended up tank-folding {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} face up. Baranov obliged and showed the superior {A-}{K-}.

Steve Dannenmann Eliminated in 12th Place (€52,416)

Steve Dannenmann busts out in 12th place.

Action folded around to Steve Dannenmann's button and he moved all in for his last roughly 130,000. Joseph Cheong snapped him off from the big blind and showed {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts}.

Unfortunately for Dannenmann, he held an under pair and his {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades} were in need of dire help to score him a double up. The flop came down {Q-Spades}{A-Clubs}{8-Spades} and was of no help to the 2005 WSOP Main Event Runner-Up.

The {4-Spades} hit the turn.

"There's always a sweat," said Cheong as Dannenmann called for a spade.

Alas, the {10-Clubs} fell on the river to eliminate Dannenmann in 12th place. Cheong stood up to shake Dannenmann's hand and Dannenmann said "You always fold jacks! Jacks are a bad hand!" with a smile.

The ever jovial Dannenmann will take home €52,416 for his efforts here in Cannes.

Albertini Takes Some From Adams

On a {3-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{K-Hearts} flop, Timothy Adams led out with a bet of an unknown amount and was called by Stephane Albertini. The {10-Clubs} turned and Adams continued for 65,000 only to be called once again.

Adams moved 123,000 into the center after the {6-Spades} completed the board on the river. Albertini called and Adams showed {Q-Diamonds}{J-Hearts} for a draw that did not get there. Albertini tabled {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts} and dragged in the pot.

Players are now on their second 20-minute break of the day.

Aces vs. Jacks

Joseph Cheong raised to 24,000 from the hijack only to have Sergii Baranov three-bet to 60,000 from the button. Cheong made the call and then check-called a bet of 80,000 on the {Q-Hearts}{4-Spades}{6-Clubs} flop, which brought about the {9-Hearts} on the turn.

Both players proceeded to check, and the Cheong led out for 100,000 on the {7-Diamonds} river. Baranov snap-called and rolled over {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}, which beat the {J-}{J-} of Cheong.

Kyle Julius Eliminated in 14th Place (€40,320)

The drama continues with huge elimination hands. Phil Hellmuth has once again regained the chip lead.

On a {7-Clubs}{9-Spades}{5-Diamonds} flop, Phil Hellmuth led out for 45,000 and his lone opponent Kyle Julius chose to flat call.

Fourth street brought the {A-Hearts} and Hellmuth quickly moved 110,000 into the middle.

Julius reached into his stack and put out a raise to 225,000.

"This is such a sick hand for me," lamented Hellmuth. "Alright, I call,"

The dealer pounded the table and rolled off the {4-Clubs} on the river. Hellmuth quickly checked and Julius announced that he was all in for his last 298,000. Hellmuth stood up from the table and stared at the board, talking the hand out to himself under his breath.

After about ninety seconds, Hellmuth counted out enough chips to call and pushed them forward.

"You're good," said Julius.

"YES!" yelled Hellmuth as he clapped his hands and jumped up from the table, showing {A-Clubs}{5-Clubs} for two pair. Julius mucked his hand but tournament staff forced it to be tabled - {Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}.

"Great play, kid," said Hellmuth with a sincere tone to Julius. "Seriously. I almost laid that down. Remind me to buy you a bottle of Dom. One bottle."

Julius will take home €40,320 in tournament winnings while Hellmuth is now the chip leader with about 2.5 million in chips.
